Speech Proposal

I chose to look into Hy-Vee because I go there a lot and it has a large presence in Iowa.  Hy-Vee is a grocery store that has many locations in Iowa.  I noticed the amount of advertising and sponsorship Hy-Vee does in the community.  I have perceived them to be successful in their advertising campaigns and wondered what about the company appeals to Iowans.  The advertisements contributed to the positive image the company has in many Iowa communities.
I plan to analyze three advertisements.  I chose to use a print ad with famous chef Curtis Stone because it shows the two most used appeals in most Hy-Vee ad campaigns.  The other two are television commercials which display these same appeals.  One commercial uses a spokesperson, Harrison Barnes, like the print add, and the other one emphasizes the sense of community in this employee owned company.  The outside source I chose to use is a news article about the partnership between chef Curtis Stone and Hy-Vee.  This article was a good fit because is shows the motives and shared beliefs between the two.

My tentative thesis is Hy-Vee predominantly uses the ethos and pathos appeals in their advertising to draw in and keep customers.  A reason I will use to back this up are the use of spokespeople as an appeal to ethos.  Also, the use of emotions (“a helpful smile”) as opposed to logic in their ads signifies the importance of pathos in their campaigns.  The visual aids I will use for this speech include the commercials and print ad.  I will include these in a power point along with a quote from the outside source.

Rhetorical Analysis- Print Ad

The author of this print advertisement is a local Iowa City/Coralville Hy-Vee.  The purpose of this ad is to draw in customers that will be tailgating before an Iowa football game.  It also is meant to show that Hy-Vee is a supports of the Hawkeyes.  The audience of this advertisement are Iowa Hawkeye football fans, and people who will be going tailgating before the game.  Logos can be seen in this advertisement in the deals that are displayed.  They are on there to have the audience look at the price per unit and realize that it is such a good deal that there is no way they could pass.  The author intends to have the audience be convinced by the facts and use the logic of a good deal to choose to shop at Hy-Vee.  I believe that pathos is the most prominent appeal in this advertisement.  They start off with the grill in the background with meat on the grill and pictures of the meat.  The audience is supposed to see this good looking meat and be emotionally compelled to buy it.  They also feature the Iowa Hawkeye logo to induce emotions into Hawkeye fans.  They want the fans to believe that they are supporting their team by shopping at Hy-Vee.  In big words the ad says, “your tailgate headquarters”.  This is trying to establish ethos.  They want the perception to be that they have everything needed for tailgating and they know how to tailgate.  They use mythos by connecting the Hawkeye logo and the football.  They believe that everyone will think of Hawkeye football and assume tailgating before the game.

conferences reflections

I found that the conferences were very helpful for my writing.  I liked that I was able to ask any questions that I had at the beginning of the conference.  This allowed me to clarify some points that I had previously been unsure about.  I also liked how after I answered all of my question I was able to hear your opinion on the paper.  Pointing out areas or ideas that needed to be organized in a better way or further explained was helpful when I went back to revise what I had done.

I liked the comments a lot but less than the conference.  They were helpful in pointing out areas that needed improvement.  But I liked to have the ability to clarify the comments in the conference.  The comments could also be understood differently than intended, and also doesn’t allow the back and forth conversation to clarify the point.
